The Jackdaw of Rheims

Started working on a new book for Pylon Press...

Some sample pieces for a group exhibition at PCA - some 'found' transparencies that I've held onto for years finally get an outing...only to be chopped in half.  But, tentative as ever with my collage work, although they were paired up and photographed, I've printed them out with a perforated line so they can be chopped in half again and reassigned to another head or body.

Onwards to Staffordshire...

tartalo

this is tartalo, a one-eyed giant from Basque mythology - he's unfeasibly strong, feeds on young folk and sheep (he has a sneaky sackful behind him) and, just because there is no apparant reference to his feelers in any of the literature, well, that doesn't mean he didn't have any...

remains

I've just started playing about with whatever remains on my desk at the end of the day - scraps of paper, cut-up photos etc...and I think I prefer them to the work I actually set out to do...

walls

Very small figures in a landscape of paper walls, this is one collage and below are variations i've been playing about with in my sketchbooks...

flourishes

I had a small book full of lettering and leftover flourishes - earlier this year I photographed all the pages and, in Photoshop, layered them on top of each other and in amongst some photos I had of messed up walls and rough surfaces. I've no idea what they could be or where they are going but I think 'work in progress' will do for now...

i dream...

These 'I dream...' drawings and photos combined, began life as the hats and ears images from my sketchbook [see below]. The speech bubbles are there for them to tell you their dreams, but I've never filled them in - I think I'd rather not know...

hats and ears

I had a pile of old photos that I picked up in a fleamarket in Paris nearly 4 years ago, and worked them into my 'hats and ears' sketchbook - an old exercise book that I'd actually painted and prepared the pages ready to work into about 16 years ago...I've no idea why I do that!! I think because my material tends to be 'found' or 'rescued' I'm very aware there are no copies, and when I use them I've got to be sure it's for the right piece. But 16 years...that's crazy!
